We bought this “HEPA” vacuum to be able to meet the requirements of the new EPA RRP lead paint rule that requires that power tools be attached to a HEPA vacuum. This comes to mean that the vacuum must be independently lab certified as a HEPA vacuum with not particle larger than 3 micrometers passing through the filter. Turns out you cannot put a “HEPA” filter into a vacuum to qualify. Each individual filter needs to be tested and have a certificate with its test results. The filters we have bought at local lumber and building material stores marked as HEPA did not have a certificate. As the fines can be over $30,000 this is reason enough to want to be sure that we got a real certified HEPA vacuum but we got nothing with the vacuum to prove it was certified.

We decided to return the Dustless Technologies shop vacuum and buy a Nilfisk HEPA vacuum instead.

Nilfisk Advance Eliminator I Vacuum (9058909010) – HEPA

For general shop use the Ridgid vacuums have great suction and are very quiet.

For hole cutting we attach the vacuum hose to the new Hole Pro vacuum connector and use the Hole Pro shields and arbor kit when using hole saws.

Hole Pro Shield XL Vacuum Adapter – adapts any Hole Pro shield for use with any vacuum including HEPA – complete dust control with adjustable hole cutters and any hole saw using XL-shields

Yes the filters are $119, but by using the pre-filter bags and making sure only to use this vacuum when doing lead dust work, this vacuum, according to their website, is EPA certified to capture down to .3 microns, which is the EPA requirement.

They also sell drywall sanding attachments, grinder attachments, and paint scrapper attachments…

So this a basic EPA HEPA vacuum that is now the base level for any jobsite work pre-1978, but of course you will still need all the 6 mil plastic, LEAD signs, caution tape, etc…joys…
